Obtain the Necessary Permits
When you purchase your new spa, you should make sure that you have any necessary permits needed for spa installation. Most cities and countries require authorization for exterior electrical circuits and for construction (if you decide to build a gazebo or addition to your house for your new spa). There may be other requirements that you will have to follow, like placing your spa in a certain location.
Picking a Foundation for Your Spa
When choosing the foundation for your spa, you should pick a place that will drain properly when it rains or snows, as well as somewhere that will look good and function well for you. If you decide to install your new spa on an existing deck or patio, make sure that the space is strong enough to hold the weight of the spa, the water, and the people who will use it. If you are thinking about placing your spa on solid ground, the spa should be elevated on 100 per cent foundation. Some great foundation options include gravel and concrete.
Spa Electrical Requirements
There are many different types of spas that you can choose from, and, while they all might be unique in their own way, most spas are built to operate at different power and usage levels. Electrical requirements for your spa will depend on the model that you choose.
For 240V, hard-wired spas, you must have a manual disconnect located at least five feet away, and within line of sight to ensure proper spa safety. Make sure that your spa’s electrical system is properly wired and grounded, and is using a GFCI cord. To properly wire your 240V spa, make sure that it is plugged directly into a dedicated outlet to avoid overloading the circuit. If your spa does not include an in-line GFCI cord, you should have a 15 amp GFCI protected outlet installed by a licensed electrician. Never use an extension cord to plug in your spa. Spas should always be placed at least 25 feet from any power lines and at least five feet away from any cords.
